What is Early Pregnancy Scan?

2D scan in early pregnancy is usually performed in the first trimester, which is usually 7 weeks from the date of the last menstrual cycle. This is usually performed to examine a very early stage of pregnancy or use to confirm your pregnancy kit result. The scan will be conducted by our medical doctor by first using the trans-abdominal probe (on your tummy). If the ultrasound image is not clear enough for diagnosis, we will switch to the trans-vaginal probe (internal scan) for better clarity. Do not worry because either way is safe for you and your baby.

Why do you need early pregnancy scan?

Some patients may have early pregnancy scan for a number of reasons like – to know estimated date of delivery, bleeding, complications in pregnancy, etc. Besides this, ultrasound scan during first trimester is very important for few other reasons. It is done to confirm whether there is a heartbeat or not in which the scan is also known as viability scan. The ultrasound scan will help doctors to calculate the gestational age, check if it’s single or multiple babies, determine the estimated date of delivery (dating scan), etc, especially if it is the first pregnancy.
