WHAT IS ULTRASOUND SCAN?
Ultrasound scan is a diagnostic procedure that is used to assess the structure of the blood vessels, muscle tissues, other organs of a human body and baby growth assessment. This procedure is carried out with the help of a transducer that sends ultrasonic sound waves at a very high frequency. The ultrasound waves pass through the skin, tissues and other organs of the body and bounce like an echo to returns to the transducer. The reflected waves are picked up by the transducer and converted into an electronic picture of tissues, cells and organs that are under study.
Ultrasound scanning is used to assess the blood flow through the different vessels as well as view the internal organs of the body as they function. This procedure is often used to examine parts such as breasts, abdomen, prostate, thyroid glands, vascular system, etc. Ultrasound scanning is also widely used during pregnancy to evaluate the development of the fetus.
